Verdict

The price is about right for a modest notebook. A good system for the security conscious, but maybe not for the beginner.

The internet is essentially a very big network of computers, and when you go online, if your PC isn't protected, there's a chance that somebody else on that network could steal information from your computer without you knowing about it.

The best way to counter any attempts is with a firewall - a device (either hardware or software) that acts as a protective barrier between your computer and the internet.

The Hitachi HN1300 takes a safety first approach to net surfing, coming with firewall software already installed. Hooking up to other computers is a breeze thanks to the built-in modem and network adapters; and once online, you have little to fear from hackers.

When we turned the Hitachi on for the first time, we noticed that the firewall software didn't load automatically. It was a simple matter of tweaking the settings but it rather spoiled the illusion of a highly secure laptop.

The Truinet software has loads of settings and filters that need to be set and configured in a way that suits your use and offers the most appropriate protection. It's an effective system, but the lack of dedicated antivirus software means it's not totally protected.

With a 700MHz Intel Celeron processor and 128Mb of memory, the notebook is well suited to office tasks. At 10Gb, the hard disk isn't huge but is fine for scribing the odd letter and surfing the internet. All aspects of setup and basic operation are amply covered by the two handbooks, so you'll be up and running with ease.

The built-in DVD drive makes watching movies a definite possibility and the 13.3in screen makes it a fairly pleasant experience. Most of the keyboard is full size too, so typing is comfortable, even if your hands rest on a case corner.

The paranoid among you will appreciate the motivation behind making such a notebook. The truth is, though, that beyond the software and couple of swish design touches, this amounts to little more than just another budget notebook.
