The rising popularity of digital cameras has seen a flurry of activity in the inkjet printer market, with manufacturers trying hard to make printing pictures as simple as possible. Epson's crack at this market is the Stylus 875DC.
The memory card in a digital camera does the same job that conventional film does in a normal camera, storing the pictures you have taken. With other types of printers you need to transfer the images from the card to the PC's hard disk to print them. With this type of printer, the card can be connected directly to it.
With other printers that use this sort of slot technology, you can print images without switching your computer on. Not so with the 875DC. Slotting in the memory card will cause the software to start up on the PC, which will display images as thumbnails allowing you to choose which ones to print.
The 875CD will take all major camera memory cards. A PC card adapter for CompactFlash memory is supplied, but users of Smartmedia and other types must use the adapters supplied by their camera manufacturer.
Setting everything up is fairly easy. The printer connects via a USB port - no parallel port version is available.
The 875CD has been specially developed for printing photos and photo reproduction is excellent, but the downside of this is that text printing is quite slow. Colours are crisp, bright and have excellent definition.
The 875DC can use photo quality paper rolls. These mount on a roller at the back of the printer and feed through, allowing edge-to-edge printing of photos with minimal waste.
Rather than acres of beige plastic, the Epson sports a smoked plastic lid, pastel blue trim and looks very smart as a result. Build quality is alright. The ink cartridges are easily accessible and changing them is a simple operation.
