Samsung YP-E32 Yepp MP3 player

MP3 players are the latest must-have gadget, effectively Walkmans with no moving parts. Samsung's long-awaited offering gives excellent sound quality.

This silver dream machine looks the part. It's no larger than a pack of cards and weighs only 72g. The rocker-style controls and LCD, for displaying track names and length, make it easy to get to grips with, while the intuitive software makes downloading tracks from your hard drive a breeze.

We were impressed with the sound quality, which is a cut above many MP3 players on the market. Much of this is a result of the nifty sound equaliser and the fact that Samsung has included a pair of good-quality headphones. And with no moving parts, you don't have to worry about tracks skipping.

As with many MP3 players the unit can be used as a voice recorder, offering about 128 minutes of recording time on the supplied 32Mb of memory. Alternatively you can squeeze about 40 minutes of digital music into the player. And therein lies the rub. Most of the new generation of MP3 players will feature 64Mb of onboard memory, which is a more realistic figure.

The Yepp doesn't offer anything we haven't seen before. It does, however, offer excellent sound quality and a neat voice recorder function, and is easy to use. Not only that, it looks chic when compared with some of the tackier plastic offerings on the market.
