Is your PC running slow? Want to upgrade the processor but don't want to spend time and money replacing both your processor and your motherboard? Then the HyperRace II - a processor on a 'slocket' card - could be the answer.
The Hypertec HyperRace II Processor Upgrade is aimed primarily at business and home users who need a quick-fix and a relatively cheap solution to upgrading their ageing PC stock. The idea is simple: inside the box you get a 466MHz Celeron processor that sits on a Slot 1 board. Put simply, this means that if you are using a Pentium II processor, from 233MHz up to 450MHz, you can slot this chip in easily and seamlessly and speed up the whole system.
The board on which the processor sits is shipped in autodetect mode, which in theory eliminates the potentially tricky manoeuvre of altering the jumper settings on your motherboard. We found that it worked well enough, although it took a little tinkering with the BIOS settings to eliminate an ominous warning message when we booted up.
Although the HyperRace II can be used on motherboards with a 100MHz front-side Bus (Pentium II processors above 333MHz using a 440BX motherboard), if you want to avoid over-clocking your processor, Hypertec advises you set it to 66MHz, which indicates that it has been designed to be most effective when upgrading from Pentium II 233MHz-333MHz chips running on 440LX motherboards. Although over-clocking your processor may give you a short-term performance boost, it can damage the processor, and for that reason the HyperRace II includes an Overheating Protection Function which will drop the processing speed by certain percentages according to how hot the processor becomes.
