iPaq upgrade only three weeks away

Compaq says to expect the much delayed Pocket PC 2002 upgrade for iPaq soon

Ian Lynch, vnunet.com 02 Nov 2001

Furious iPaq users who have been waiting since 4 October for promised Pocket PC 2002 upgrades from Compaq, have been told they'll get them in the next three weeks.

Neil Dagger, iPaq and Connected Device Business Manager, Compaq UK and Ireland, said the delay had been caused by the need for extra ROM testing caused by additional Microsoft Beta releases.

He told vnunet.com: "The delay on the Pocket PC 2002 Upgrade is due to the time between Microsoft's release of the final version of the OS to Compaq, and Compaq engineering and software developers being able to release the final upgrade CD."

"This team has had to test the software on every version of the iPaq, every ROM image, every sku, and add drivers and tools to make the upgrade as seamless as possible," he added.

"As some Beta versions were given out by Microsoft, that led to other ROM versions being available. Compaq needed to ensure that the upgrade worked for every customer.

"We felt that getting it right was more important than getting it out immediately. Ideally we would have liked to do both, but it is in final testing now and should be available shortly."

Users have complained bitterly in newsgroups about the wait.
