AMD and
Cray have announced an
agreement under which the supercomputer manufacturer will use AMD's
Opteron
processors in its ultra high-end systems until the end of the decade.
Cray currently offers the
XT3 and
XD1
supercomputers, based on the AMD Opteron, along with the
X1E based
on Cray custom-built vector processors.
Peter Ungaro, president and chief executive at Cray, said: "In the near-term,
the AMD Opteron processor roadmap provides our customers with a smooth upgrade
path to multi-core systems."
The programme aims to provide next-generation systems for the national
security, scientific and industrial user communities that run applications at
speeds of one
petaflop (a
million billion calculations per second) or more by the end of the decade.
