After much speculation and rumour, 3Com has finally launched a colour version of its best-selling Palm palmtop computer.
The Palm IIIc closely follows the design of the existing Palm III, but the monochrome screen has been replaced with a backlit 256-colour TFT manufactured by Sharp. Size and weight isn't drastically affected - the Palm IIIc is marginally longer than the Palm III but is no deeper or wider, and weighs in at a pocketable 200g.
The AA batteries of earlier models have also been ditched in favour of a rechargeable Lithium Ion cell. The Palm IIIc costs £349.99.
3Com has also announced two other new Palms - the Palm Vx with 8Mb of memory for £299 and the entry-level 2Mb Palm IIIe for £149.99. New accessories have been launched too, the most interesting of them being the Palm Portable Keyboard. Expected to cost around £70, this is a Palm-size box that folds open to provide a full-size keyboard for use with Palm devices.
