Sony is to start selling Linux operating system (OS) kits to enable Linux applications to run on the PlayStation 2 console.
The consumer electronics giant said it will start selling disks to install the OS on the games device, as well as tools to develop Linux applications.
"Many Linux fans have requested that they would like to execute applications not only on PCs but on PlayStation games consoles," said a Sony spokesperson.
The kits will go on sale in Japan in May and in the US and Europe in June. They will cost $188.30 in Japan, $299 in the US and $215 in Europe.
Sony aims to expand the role of PlayStation as a platform and enable more applications such as word processing.
The company said that the kits also include a 40Gb internal hard drive with a USB keyboard and mouse.
