Half a million computer users who thought they were part of a worldwide search for aliens have all been processing the same data. The SETIHome (search for extra-terrestrial intelligence) program downloaded software allowing users to process radio signals while their PCs were idle, but the volunteers have all received the same data and no new data has been sent since 24 May. Those in charge of the project at the University of California said problems would be rectified soon.
A project that uses computers' idle processing time to search for extraterrestrial life has received financial backing from several US hi-tech millionaires including Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. 09 Aug 2000
